Life at Carr House in Summer
We are now well into Summer and life here goes on with fruit picking in the garden, cutting lawns and looking after some Labrador puppies which we born last Sunday.
More and more guests are enjoying the benefits, we can now offer with part self catering in rooms . With a fridge, microwave and toaster available you can make snacks and small meals if you do not wish to venture out in the evenings. Even just chill out around here in the woods and fields,by a stream. You dont even have to go that far, enjoy sitting in the garden listening to the birds, reading a book Enjoying that bottle of wine you treated yourself to. We are happy to help should you wish for a food delivery to arrive in time so you can make your own supper, snacks and small meals. There is a barbecue too for those more adventurous souls if you choose. A cooked breakfast, all comes in with the price so no need to worry about that.
The Star in Harome has reopened its doors after that terrible fire and once again serving delicious meals . Michelin starred with a very reasonable market menu 3 course meal for £30 which I had for my birthday and very good it was too ,as well as their a la carte menu.
Across the field from us is Wass Farm and you can buy delicious charcuterie.
.
Jack is busy with his dogs and Minty who a lot of you have meet or seen on facebook is his shadow. There is a saying if only the dog could talk … She makes friends with anyone who will give her the time of day and enjoys all the attention.
We are busy working and in the early stages of bringing a walled garden on the farm back to its former glory. There were poplars tree which were hollow in the middle so had to come down which was a shame but necessary. Surprisingly they are putting up green shoots from the bottom again.
By our Christmas newsletter hopefully will be able to tell you more exciting things and who we are working with and what we can offer in 2024. Wass Grange and its walled garden overlooks Byland Abbey. You can tread the route that the monks walked many centuries before. Grange is the word for a granary and this historically is an outlaying farm belonging to a monastery or feudal Lord. A large country house and when I googled a bit more the motto of the Grange Movement-USA- from the 1800s was “We have always welcomed and invited people of all races, creeds, religions and nationalities ". My grandmother did this in the 1920s and 30s and here we are 100 years on doing the same.
We have a good relationship with Castle Howard as we continue to work together with local businesses. For guests staying with us we are able to offer a reduction in entrance costs. To get you in the Christmas spirit they will be open from mid November with their spectacular Christmas event.
Also as we would really love you to experience a gastronomical experience at Andrew Pern’s The Star at Harome, we offer complimentary travel to get you there - Arrangements can be made with a local taxi firm for your return journey.

The Grande Dame of Dining - The Star at Harome
It is 12 hours since I heard the shocking news that has rocked the area. I have thought about "her" all day and still cant believe it. I woke to news that the Star at Harome was on fire and the devastating damage which had been done to this C13th building.
The Star is like an old friend having been welcomed through the doors for over half a century.Yes I have been 14 when I first went in. Into a place like no other. Pimms served in pint pots, huge stiltons filled with port and fox masks hanging from the beams dressed up like people with neck ruffs and horn rimmed spectacles sat on the end of their snouts. In those days it was owned by Dick and Jenny Dresser who won the very first awards for this fine eatery, not much bigger than Guillivers House. A few years later I used to go up the stairs to the flat where the Dressers lived and do Granny D's and Jennys hair and a quick snip round Dick.
Another era and it was the wild time, our hosts were Tim Gascoigne Mullet and Tony Bowron who had a beautiful St Bernard dog called Solomon. Drinking Pimms into the early hours made by Ernest "Polly" Pearson. and still the red croquet placemats graced the dining tables.
Enter the girlfriend of another, who had been in the advert, the girl floating down the river eating a chocolate Flake.... if only the walls could talk.
We have celebrated births and marriages and a few too many wakes here. Christening parties and divorces. Had Christmas parties, 18th,21st 30th and 40th birthday parties and so on - there is nowhere better. When we went on holidays we would always eat at The Star the night before ..to keep us going for the journey ahead on wondering what the food might be like. Memories of long ago Friday nights that were domino nights for Wilson Barker and his cronies who sat on the table near the bar and were served ham sandwiches. The Sinnington Hunt meeting outside, the end of season shooting parties. Whether you were dressed in your finery or in your work clothes, the welcome over the years has always been the same ,the warmth the walls hold, the atmosphere that has been created with love over the centuries. Photos didnt matter like they do today you went out to enjoy yourselves not to show the wide world what you were doing
Even on the night of the present owner ,Andrew Pern, turned 40 to enjoy a slice of a chef'hat shaped birthday cake. The time when Jack thought he had found a truffle and it turned out to be a morel. The Star is the heart of the village. And for the villagers and locals around, holds a star in most peoples hearts. A place where the local poacher would rub shoulder with a Lord or Duchess.
I talk of the Star in the past tense, but these are memories. I am sure Andrew Pern, his wife Fran, his family, friends and staff will not let The Star slip into the past tense, but will do everything they can to make the Star shine again. She has not held the crown for all this time to fade away now. Time will bring her back to shine again and be the diamond she has always been. And we have a 70th and a 100th birthday birthday for 2022 to celebrate.
I have a little piece of the Star that was given to me by Dick and Jenny for my 21st birthday. I dont know what the damage is yet,but when the time comes when the Old Lady open her arms again I will take it along and if it is needed it will stay there.

Sneak a peep....
The Star Inn the City... opens its doors tomorrow and Andrew Pern should be well pleased with himself. idyllically placed overlooking the River Ouse at the bottom of Museum Gardens.A restaurant on stilts so flood as it might this eating house will always be a dry dock. Isabelle and I took a walk around today as the Inn was getting its finishing touches were coming together as it is open for the public from tomorrow Tuesday 22nd October. We saw the man himself ,Andrew Pern giving an interview.Shame you aren't a lip reading I said to Isabelle. We had hoped to take Isabelle to eat there but as she flies home to Sweden on Wednesday it doesn't look as if it is going to happen this trip round. It all looks delightfully and we were greeted by charming staff but still alas no table for our little Swedish friend.

Posh Ploughmans....
I went to the Star in Harome yesterday lunchtime with Kate and her new beau.My complaint was that
was so much on the menu to tempt me.The asparagus soup with cheese fritters lost by a short head to a posh ploughman's. Well it was only lunchtime. It was so generous in size twice as much as I could eat. They kindly let me bring the rest home and my mother really enjoyed her high tea of rare beef and cheese. The pickles and relishes are made on site. The ham was so tender it just fell apart. They had even added a hard boiled egg in a egg cup with legs. Cannibalism to the first degree that made me feel as if I was eating Humpty Dumpty.A piece of pork pie which was a delight -as I just love pork pie.I munched my way through the celery not because I like it but thought I had to "do" healthy,Lettuce in ever colour shape and form. The bestest of bread which with the amount of butter I put on would not be classed as healthy but who cares when it is that good and I had eaten the celery to counteract my actions. In four words- a very delightful meal. Thank you Andrew Pern . Guests this is an ideal place to come to while away a few hours -enjoy delicious food, drink good wine and even better Pimms in the delightful surrounding of an age old thatched building called the Star. You enter bobbing your head through the low stable door into another world away from the maddening crowd.Furnished with Mousey Thompson furniture and much character in every crook and cranny. Please dont tell anyone ...
