Things are looking up with the Malton Gazette.... Beating Coronavirus

For those of you who do not live in our area you may not have heard of our local weekly paper.
Wednesdays is the best day of the week as the Malton Gazette comes out. It supplies us with all the weekly news of the area and for people like ourselves it is the highlight of our week.
It brings us news of birthday and sadly deaths ,photos of local functions and dramas and in recent years we have been featured in it from good times to sad times. It used to have engagements and wedding announcements they seem to have gone .As I went to school at Malton Grammar many years ago it was a way of seeing who was getting spliced and then hatching. It contains cattle market prices and sports news .
One year I was in it 3 weeks on the trot ... and didn't I get some rib for that too when I went to the pub. Often as I fundraise  or for winning something to do with my Bed Breakfast business and then for some of the wacky ideas I have had for again raising money for charity. As most of you will know my brain never stops .. One day it will and I suppose then my last announcement will be in the Malton Gazette . But until then I will continue to buy it .
I must admit while we are having scary times in lockdown I have maybe not got it on the Wednesday and one week it wasn't till the following Monday but we still had it and now to keep up amused they have put us pages of quizzes and crossroads to do . Very useful in the print too they have put the shops and businesses  that are open and ready to deliver
So Karen Darley, the lady who I know from the paper , you are another of those people who I salute as tonight but better than that we got this following  and I will certainly be ringing up in the morning to order ours and hope you will too as they are finding another way we need not go out and helping to beat the Coronavirus spreading . SO why dont you order yours. And as I type I think now here is a present to give whether it be for a birthday or Christmas when the person you know has most things and it makes for something for the whole year or for as long as the money you want to spend runs out. .And here is a photo which appeared in the Malton Gazette of my dad and me over 40 years ago .Image may contain: 1 personKaren Darley (@KarenGazette) | Twitter

A message from the Editor
Times are challenging for the local newspaper industry.
The Coronavirus outbreak has hit us hard due to declining advertising revenue and a reduction in newspaper sales while our readers are in lockdown.
People are more reluctant to leave the house to go and pick up their local newspaper – and of course, we completely understand.
However, for us to continue to provide the best quality trusted local news and information – particularly during these times - we still need the funds to support our important journalism.
That's why we are now offering you home delivery, with your local newspaper delivered safely to your door, so we can continue to provide you with the best possible trusted local news.
It couldn't be easier to have your local newspaper delivered – just call 0800 953 0227 and our home delivery team will take your details securely over the phone. Nunnington Hall... what a gem

So when it is half term and a sunny cold frosty day what do you do with the children.

We all had the most amazing time at Nunnington Hall which is only 6 miles from us. The River Rye runs through the grounds and the gardens are a great

place for children to run off all that extra energy.
The house was decked for Halloween .Nunnington Hall was a lived in home that I passed every day when I went to Malton Grammar School. I remember the Clives living here with their St Bernard when I went to school. Today there seemed to be far more rooms and passageways that what there was back then . It still has very much of a homely feel and I could quite happily pack my bags and move in . A rod in hand sitting on the banks of the Rye fishing for my supper. I remember been told of a ghost -a  lady who walked in the garden. Maybe it is just too beautiful to leave. The children had a great time tying their ribbons to the tree...making memories ,making wishes then running around the garden, lost in a world of make believe and fantasies that are so often missed in the fast world we live in now. This is more how our childhoods were spent. We adults enjoyed a walk around the garden in the sunshine, the serenity and the peacock elegant even though he was missing his tail feathers joined us silently in conversation ...... a marvellous afternoon.

Apple Day At Helmsley Walled Garden

They are such a friendly crew at Helmsley Walled Garden.  We are very lucky to have such a  gem of a place only 6 miles from us. And last Saturday I took Geneva , a Canadian guest, along with me to their Open Apple Day . Mike was there talking about his bee hives. The bees playing their part around the
orchards. We were amazed at the different colour of apple juice that was on show all taken from the Walled Garden ,all bottled up ready to drink.
Then we took a quick walk around the garden and into the Orchid House that was playing host to the harvest of gourds. Every year I say next year I am going to grown some for myself..and another year passes maybe 2017 .
This is certainly a hidden gem of Helmsley and Ryedale too. A charity set up many seasons ago by a very enthusiastic Alison Ticehurst ,a lovely lady and had the privilege of knowing. Her enthusiasm was infectious -well she was our doctor's wife, which lead my Dad to lending them a small plough and I think it is still there.

Roses at Rogers

Last weekend was the British Isles Breeders and Growers Rose Festival in Ryedale held at RV Rogers just outside Pickering. It was a lovely summer's day and the roses all looked a picture. I took my Dad along to see the 150 or so roses which were on offer. The Calender Girls were there too as they had a rose named after them. The Ryedale Rose was given by a kind couple from Sheffield and there was a prize giving. All a lot of work for David Wilce the Chairman. The presenttaion lasted around 90 minutes. The champion winner had come all the way from Andover and was quite a young chap. Along with a magnificent cup I had given a prize of a free 2 night stay here with us .No doubt I will be hearing from him shortly. He said it would make a nice change as he usually attended these shows and slept in his camper van. My Dad got talking to Ryedale's youngest Chairman of the Council Luke Ives.My Dad's maternal side of the family were from Norton so Luke would get quite a history lesson I think We had a lovely lunch and Jonathan who is always a obliging member of staff was on hand.My Dad really enjoyed his chat with him. We had a lovely lunch whilst the jazz band played in the background. Oh so English country garden with lady artists donning their straw hats to paint their corner of the day. This is the second year that it has been held.It will continue -so a date for your diary next year.

Malton and its market days

Depending on whether you are a farmer or a shopper, markets are on different days .We take livestock to be sold on Tuesdays. Hopefully Phillip Plaice and his merry bunch of auctioneers will rap up a good price for us. Shoppers wanting a market to buy vegetables .flowers etc are on Saturdays. Malton is truly a market town. A sad day may soon dawn when the livestock market is moved out of the middle of the town so better make it something to see soon. The Shambles is the little street that goes up to the livestock market from the main hub of shops .Call in the Spotted Cow pub for a drink or a mug of tea on market days. At the bottom of the Shambles, Selina Scott sells her Angora sheeps socks. Selina of newscaster fame long ago lives over the hill from us. Malton is a very special place and a friendlier place you couldn't wish to find. I went to school there. My paternal great grandparents lived just over the river in Norton. A lot of the shops are individually owned and don't worry if a shopkeeper talks to you. They are not trying to "chat" you up but are passing the time of day with you. They talk to you as if they has known you for years. This is Malton.
